Bark is the outer layer stripped from timber, graded to an even size, and it gives a darker, tidier decorative finish that breaks down slowly. Woodchip is the whole branch chipped up, so it is rougher, paler and quicker to rot down. We supply the bark: for borders, beds and anywhere on show, it is the better material.

About 50mm is the sweet spot for a border: deep enough to block light to weeds and hold moisture, without burying your plants. Lay it over soil you have cleared of weeds and watered, and keep it a little clear of plant stems. Top it up every couple of years as it slowly breaks down.
